Get Holi-Ready in 5 Simple Steps!

Holi Festival Tips Travel Fashion Beauty Blogger Lulu Meets World by Lumen Beltran Mumbai India Asia

Happy Holi!

For those who don’t know about this Hindu spring festival, Holi – also known as “festival of colours” – signifies the victory of good over evil, and is also a festival for forgiveness and new beginnings. It’s a national holiday celebrated with family and friends by throwing colours at one another.

So basically, it’s a huge water fight. Except it’s way more fun because there are all sorts of different colours!

But be warned, not all of the colours being used are safe! Many people use washable, organic colouring derived from natural sources, but chances are, you will be splashed with chemicals that could be harmful!

Here are my 5 best tips for a safe and joyful Holi:

1. Buy cheap sunglasses

It would be a shame to miss out on the colourful Holi experience if you couldn’t see! Ensure you protect your vision from chemical damage by purchasing cheap sunglasses. Most Holi festivities take place outdoors anyways, so protecting your peepers from harmful UV rays is an added bonus! Besides, who couldn’t use the effortlessly cool factor that a pair of shades adds to your ensemble?

2. Lather oil into your hair and skin

Lathering oils into your hair and skin creates a physical barrier between your skin and the colours that can potentially stain your skin for days! Everyone knows my go-to oil for literally anything is coconut oil (Read7 Ways to Incorporate Coconut Oil Into Your Daily Beauty Regimen). But not this time. In fact, I would recommend mustard oil (or, “sarso oil” in Hindi) as it doesn’t absorb into the skin as quickly as our beloved coconut oil.

3. Wear whites for souvenirs

As for attire, I would wear WHITE! The colours seep into the clothing and they make for great souvenirs after the festival. Make sure you wear something you would basically use a rag otherwise as your clothes will get ruined! Wearing anything that has significant sentimental value or a steep price tag isn’t a good idea. This suggestion goes for shoes and undergarments too. (Yeah, your Victoria’s Secret fantasy bra? Wear it on your wedding night – not Holi!)

4. Shield your phone with a waterproof case

Think about how many functions your phone provides. It can be used as an alarm clock, a notepad, a GPS, and many more! Now think about all the conveniences you will no longer have if your phone happens to get soaked in water. You can kiss your social media life goodbye! For waterproof phone cases, I recommend LIFEPROOF. I’ve used their Nuud iPhone 6S case for years and my phone has survived countless drops and scratches (no thanks to my clumsy self).

5. Bring a selfie stick

Not only does your selfie stick keep your phone away from potential water damage, it also helps to capture memories with your friends!
