Hi beauty junkies! Long time, no skincare post. I wanted to get real with you for a minute and talk about the importance of tailoring a skincare routine for sensitive skin.
As a cosmetician, every time I hear anyone claiming they have “sensitive skin”, it’s hard not to be skeptical. While their skin may be more reactive, that doesn’t necessarily mean their skin is actually sensitive. But one allergic reaction to a skincare product that just doesn’t agree with your skin is enough to have anyone scrambling to their dermatologist. You’re going to be more careful after that one incident. You’re going to want gentle, soothing formulas that are still going to do the job, whether or not your skin is actually sensitive or not!
If you’ve been following me for quite a while, you’re probably familiar with my love for makeup. I could go on and on about my favourite foundation formulas, colour correction, and high-performance concealers. Skincare on the other hand? Mehhhh … I just wasn’t as educated on the topic in the past because I didn’t feel the need to take extra steps to take care of my skin. I’ve always had clear skin. I never worried about acne, dark circles, or rosacea. I was that beauty enthusiast who would use harsh scrubs and “natural” face masks made of ingredients I was potentially allergic to. There’s nothing I wouldn’t try.
All of that changed while I was completing my internships in India. The pollutants in the new environment and its humid weather caused me to break out like crazy! And in an effort to escape my sebaceous horror story, I rubbed my skin raw using whatever products I could get my hands on. As a result, I overwhelmed my poor pores. All of a sudden I wasn’t just dealing with acne. I was dealing with redness, irritation, and stinging. I needed a skincare routine that wasn’t going to overwhelm my skin.

Which brings me to my blog post today! Today, I’m going to be sharing some tips I’ve picked up – through research or my own personal experiences – while searching for gentle products that wouldn’t irritate my skin, whether or not it was actually sensitive. I realized that my competency as a cosmetician is limited if my understanding of skincare is limited. After all, you need a clear canvas for a beautiful painting! I’ve made more of an effort to learn more about skincare these past few months and I’d like to share my sensitive skin solutions with you!
3 Solutions for Sensitive Skin
1. Moisturize like your life depends on it
And yes, that means morning and evening. The higher the sensitivity of your skin, the more susceptible it is to water loss and environmental damage. The potentially detrimental effects of pollutants from our surroundings needs to be combated with a gentle moisturizer. A product I would recommend is the new Toleriane Sensitive by La Roche-Posay, available at Shoppers Drug Mart. My combo/oily skin loves it since it absorbs quickly! I absolutely despise that uncomfortable, cream-sitting-on-top-of-my-natural-“glow” feeling. Yuck.
2. Patch tests are key
Being on the hunt for a new moisturizer or face wash can be tough, especially when you have sensitive skin. Luckily, there’s no need to dive into a whole new range or even one product all at once. In fact, you can perform a patch test and if you can, take some samples home before buying the full product. You can take a small amount of a new product and apply it to your inner lower arm, or somewhere more inconspicuous, like behind your ear, for example. Watch for signs of reaction over the next 24 hours, and if it’s all clear, you’re good to go!
3. Makeup matters
Lastly, caring for sensitive skin doesn’t stop at creams, serums, and face washes. You have to take your cosmetic ingredients into account, too. Keep in mind you’re putting all this goop in direct contact with your face. Anytime you’re shopping for makeup or a makeup remover, make sure you’re reading labels and watch out for preservatives, colorants, or fragrances that can irritate your skin. (Pssst, if you’re looking for a mascara that truly performs, my sensitive-eyed self personally loves La Roche-Posay Respectissime Volume Mascara! Its skinny brush makes for easy application on your lower lash line.)
