I wouldn’t exactly call myself a health freak.
Don’t get me wrong, I love being active. Especially since hitting the pavement for a morning run is the perfect excuse to indulge in my questionable love for pop music. But at the end of the day, I’m no stranger to skipping workouts and binge watching TV serials. Now, exercising isn’t the only thing I struggle with in the health department. In fact, it’s only half the battle. The older I get, the more conscious I become of what I put into my body. I pay less attention to how foods taste and focus more on how they make me feel.
While traveling, sticking to a healthy routine is about as easy as navigating Mumbai’s local trains. I’ve been an expat here for 8 months now, and I still haven’t been able to maintain get into a clean eating habit. Traffic moves at a glacial pace in this city, but time, however, does not. After a long day at work, I simply don’t have the time or energy to scroll through Pinterest recipes and then physically execute them.
But that doesn’t mean I don’t try! I’m constantly looking for ways to make my life easier, especially when it comes to food. What can I say? I’m a full on convenience-seeking, meme-loving, millennial. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Believe it or not, I get asked about my diet plan and fitness routine a lot, which is why I’ve decided to introduce #LuluEatsWorld to the blog. (Shout-out to everyone who encouraged me to bring this InstaStory series to a more permanent platform!) And what better way to do that than to share my favourites from Taste Case!
The Taste Case
I like subscription boxes. And I like them even better when there’s delicious snacks involved. For those who aren’t already familiar with Taste Case, it’s pretty much like receiving a monthly birthday surprise filled with four artisinal food brands. The best part is that they deliver it right to your doorstep, on the same day of every month! (Remember what I said about getting into a routine?) Here’s what I got in my Taste Case!
India is full of surprises. One of them being the fact that I enjoyed the “I Heart Strawberry” Smoodie more than the “Mad About Mango” one! I know. I’ve brought dishonour on my Filipino family. If you’re working your butt off at a desk job, these natural fruit smoothies are among the most convenient and time-effective ways to get your daily dose of fibre and antioxidants. Drink up!
Muskmelon Seeds + Detox Tea
If you’re not sprinkling muskmelon seeds on yogourt parfait, your breakfast isn’t really pairfait, it’s more like presque parfait. Plus, you’re missing out on a superb source of protein. I challenge you to be as extra as I am and start sprinkling them over anything and everything. Soups. Salads. Oatmeal. Anything so you can do this 👇
If you’re looking to rev up your metabolism in the morning, the detox tea in this Taste Case will give you that boost. Besides, it’ll also make a difference in your skin!
Confession: My self-proclaimed “foodie” self didn’t even know what chutney was before I moved out to India. Eight months later, it’s something I gobble up with idli on almost every morning! Coconut chutney changed my life forever. So you can imagine how pleasantly surprised my island girl taste buds were when I found a jar of mango chutney from The Little Farm Co. in my Taste Case! For my non-Indian readers out there, please make an effort to try chutney as a layer in a sandwich or as a dipping sauce.
Crisps + Chunks
Remember that New Year’s Resolution you made about 6 months back about how you were going to start eating healthier? Chances are, you’ve lost your clean eating momentum since then. No worries, it’s not too late to get back into the groove. I simply swap out potato chips for pineapple chunks, spinach crisps, or beet root crisps (my all-time favourite!). Desi-V-Desi uses a dryer technology that preserves the original nutrients of the fruits and veggies they use, which also increases shelf life. If you’re headed to faraway lands, make sure to stash these bad boys in your carry-on. I promise they’re tasty but I can’t promise that you won’t finish them before you even take off! (I always do, lol)
