My #1 Skincare Tip for the Girl On-the-Go

I’ve never had acne.

Ever, in my life. Sure, I’ve had random breakouts throughout my youth here and there (LOL @ how I say “youth” as if I’m a middle-aged woman). Early morning basketball practices spare no-one, not to mention hormonal changes during that time of the month. I’d much rather run an endless number of suicides than be introduced to a new zit on my face the next day.

Moving to Mumbai has been challenging in many ways. But the hardest battle I face here in India is between my skin and the humidity.

I always take pride in the fact that my skin seemingly adjusts to any environmental condition with ease. Living in Calgary definitely helps out with that. After all, it’s not uncommon to experience all four seasons in one day! But there’s a reason why cosmetics companies create different formulations for different climates.

My #1 Skincare Tip for the Girl On-the-Go

If you’re completing an internship abroad or a student exchange for a longer period of time, go out of your way to pick up skincare products within the country you’re staying in. You’d be surprised at how much of a difference it can make in your skin! There was no way my foundation and creams from Canada could fly in Mumbai’s humidity. The products I was using were clogging up my pores simply because they were too thick.

Here are two products I’ve switched to recently:

1. Nivea Soft Cream

(Available literally anywhere)

Sometimes the best products are the most generic ones. Nivea’s soft cream doesn’t come in fancy packaging, but there’s a reason it’s available most everywhere in India! I picked mine up at a local general store across the street from my flat. This moisturizer contains Vitamin E which reduces my acne scars immensely. It absorbs quickly into the skin, so you don’t feel greasy when wearing it during the day.

2. Lakme 9-to-5 Foundation

(Available at

I swear, Lakme should change the name from “9-to-5” to “Forever-and-Always”! This full coverage foundation stays put when applied in the morning and requires minimum touch-ups during the day (if at all). In fact, I stopped wearing primer altogether because of this quality. What’s surprising is that even though it provides heavier coverage, it still feels light when applied to your face and it’s completely matte, too. 10/10 would recommend for Mumbai’s weather. The only downside is the applicator. I’d much prefer a pump bottle but I guess it’s better than having no applicator at all.
